Company Profile
Medtronic is the world leader in medical technology, pioneering
therapies that restore health, extend life and alleviate pain.
Founded in 1949, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Medtronic today provides
products and services that treat more than 1.5 million people each
year. Medtronic is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in part by
supplying information to help patients be their own best advocates.
Business Situation
Medtronic, world leader in medical technology, does
business in 120 countries worldwide and has
the kind of complex computer networking problems you would expect
to see in organizations of this size and geographically distributed
scope. In addition to various Windows platforms, many Medtronic users run
OS/2 and Unix workstations. This posed a serious barrier to standardizing on
Microsoft Office 2000 and other office productivity applications.
Alto's Solution
With Altos assistance, Medtronic designed and
implemented a load-balanced Windows Terminal Server + Citrix MetaFrame server farm that
supports 500 users on seven servers, with each
server running four CPUs and 2 Gb of RAM. Supported applications
include Microsoft Office 2000, Novell GroupWise, Netware client integration to support their
existing Netware network, and an NFS client to access
an existing Unix network. All of this software is
available to Medtronic users running under OS/2 and Unix.
Business Benefit
Medtronic gains all of the benefits associated with
a centrally-managed server farm: standard applications across the entire enterprise,
greatly reduced total cost of ownership (TCO), centralized administration, streamlined end-user
technical support, and so on. Windows Terminal Server and MetaFrame are
a great combination that can support a large number
of OS/2 and Unix-based clients.
Technologies Used
- Windows NT Server Terminal Server Edition
